I was born in Juneau and grew up trolling off the Fairweather Grounds in the Gulf of Alaska. I currently gillnet on the Copper River and Prince William Sound out of Cordova, Alaska. As a lifelong Alaskan hunter and fisherman I am passionate about protecting my backyard and I am really interested in kelp farming because kelp will help keep our Alaskan waters clean and create habitat for fish – that I can later catch.  Kelp also provides the opportunity for me to diversify my salmon fishing business into a winter job and its perfect because kelp grows in winter and is harvested in spring and salmon is caught in the summer and fall. I’m looking forward to watching kelp grow!

SVEN'S WILD SEAFOOD CO., LLC

The four reasons I am getting into kelp farming are in the picture above. Kelp is unique in that it takes no soil, chemicals or additives to grow – you just plant it in the water and it blooms into a regenerative life force with a multitude of uses. As a lifelong Alaska commercial fisherman I want to be involved in growing a product that can both provide an income for my family and help keep Alaska waters pristine for fish and sea life and kelp has almost magical qualities for doing so. I want my kids to enjoy the same clean waters that I have known and loved all my life and for them to be able to continue to sustainably harvest seafood.
